Keynote Speakers
Erica Bare and Tiffany Burns
Everyone knows why building connections with our students and colleagues is so important, but couldn’t we all benefit from the playbook on how to do it? Erika Bare and Tiffany Burns provide this with practical and immediately applicable strategies to reinvigorate and improve systems in the front office by harnessing the power of connection. We all know that the educators who run the office are really the folks who run our schools! As the first point of contact for our school communities, these staff are critical in building Connected Relationships for our educators, students, and their caregivers. With a fast-paced and humorous approach, this keynote is full of engaging content, model demonstrations, and back-pocket strategies you will be inspired to put into practice and share with the other educators in your building.
Erika Bare has been an educator for over 20 years, currently serving as the Assistant Superintendent in the Ashland School District in Oregon. A special education teacher by training, she is passionate about supporting all students through individualized supports to reach their limitless potential.
Tiffany Burns loves working with kids. In her two decades in education, she taught elementary, middle, and high school students, and worked as an instructional coach, curriculum writer, and university adjunct instructor in Oregon, Alaska, and Mexico. She loves her current role, as an elementary school principal where she gets to lead, learn, and play with her favorite people–kids and their grown-ups.
Erika and Tiffany connected 13 years ago in their administrative licensure program. They bonded over a shared passion for students and the educators that serve them. They enjoy collaborating and writing as a way to share their expertise with other educators. Most recently, they published Connecting Through Conversation: A Playbook for Talking with Students. Erika and Tiffany love working as school administrators in the same district, while also providing professional development, consultation, and facilitation of book studies for educators across the country.

LEGAL ISSUES FOR SECRETARIES
Carol Barlow Lear has advocated for public education for five decades in multiple roles. She grew up in the East Millcreek area (Olympus High School and University of Utah) and is now a mother and grandmother with three opinionated children and eight rambunctious grandchildren. When her children were in school she served in PTA and on community councils.
Carol was a high school teacher for five years.
She graduated from the S.J. Quinney College of Law and then worked as the Director of Law and Policy for 27 years at the Utah State Office of Education. She also earned her administrative license in 2000 and was a USU adjunct professor in the Education Leadership Department for 20 years.
Now, in “retirement” and as an attorney in private practice since 2014, Carol represents many school districts, charter schools and parents.

Carmen Rasmusen Herbert

Carmen Rasmusen Herbert was finalist on the second season of FOX’s “American Idol”
in 2003. She made it to the Top Six before being eliminated.
Carmen has appeared on many talk and entertainment shows including David
Letterman, the Today show, MSNBC, and Good Morning America. She was also a
contestant on NBC’s “Fear Factor.”
Carmen completed two nation-wide tours; one with the Season 2 American Idol
contestants, and one of her own, promoting her first full-length album titled "Nothin' Like
the Summer.” Her single which she co-wrote received a New Music Weekly award,
made it to number one on the independent music charts, and her music video “Nothin’
Like the Summer” won the "Pick it or Flick it" competition on CMT's Top 20 Countdown.
Carmen has written two books: "Staying in Tune" and “You are More”, geared toward
young women where she talks about her experiences on American Idol and how her
faith and standards helped keep her grounded.
Carmen wrote a weekly column for the Deseret News for ten years. She has spoken to
girls and women all over the US and Canada for the last two decades and especially
loved her time as featured presenter at Deseret Book’s “Time Out for Girls” tour.
Carmen currently has a podcast called “Doing Good.” She has enjoyed writing and
performing in a Christmas show called “Laughing All the Way” with John Bytheway,
Hank Smith, and Meg Johnson for the last six years.
Carmen teaches voice lessons and has several dozen amazing students who she loves
watching grow and develop their own talents.
Carmen is married to Brad Herbert, son of former Utah Governor Gary Herbert. They
have four boys who love school (most of the time) and Carmen enjoys embarrassing
them frequently as a substitute teacher for the Alpine School District.
